The roll-out call of designers at Heals Fabrics was very impressive throughout the 1960s and into the 1970s. A significant number of European designers contributed patterns , and in 1964 a German branch, Heal Textil Gmbh, was established. New contributors who fed into Heals over the course of the decade included Ann Ogle, along with names such as Zandra Rhodes, Anniki and Ilmari Tapiovaara, Arno Thoner, Carola and Daniel Olsen, Kristina Vaughan-Jones, Brian Knight and more.
In the 1960s circle motifs were all pervasive at Heal Fabrics. Offset circles formed the basis of Evelyn Brooks striking black and white pattern 'Impact' (1965) created at the height of Op mania. Hard on the heels of Op came Flower Power and psychedelia, combined in Colleen Farrs cartoon style 'Cloister' (1968). The heady late 1960s design cocktail was further intensified by liberal injections of Art Nouveau and Art Deco Revivalism. Orientalism, another potent theme surfaced in patterns such as the Persian inspired 'Trellis' (1968) by Robert Dodd.
No company has since come near to equalising the achievements of Heal Fabrics in the field of modern printed pattern design.
These curtains epitomise all that was Heals at this time, the vibrant colour enriched with the over printing of gold onto this cotton crepe give an energy and stylish elegance that no era has produced since.
The cost of course would have been significant at the time and measuring over 2m in length with a width and a half of fabric to each curtain, that is a lot of luscious fabric !
