How the World is changing.
George Washington Bacon, who designed this map, was born in Lockport, New York State and moved to London in 1861. A serial entrepreneur, he set up a number of diverse businesses, one of the earliest being importing maps that detailed areas and events relevant to the American Civil War.
Managing to publish a wealth of work which mapped London in a number of ways and to varying scales, towards the end of the 19th century Bacon expanded his already vast portfolio with the acquisition of the London publisherJames Wylds and later his company was taken on by the well established Scottish firm of W & A K Johnston.
There is an interesting link with Bacon and the Temperance Movement. He produced many cycling maps and cycling was seen as one of the tools through which working people of the great industrial towns could be tempted away from a culture of drinking. Bacon took advantage of advertising on his maps from Frys’ and Tranters’ Temperance Hotels.
